Athena Award goes to...

We're so proud of you Nanny!!!

KAYSVILLE — Shirley Bouwhuis is this year’s recipient of the Athena Award.

She will receive the honor during the a luncheon meeting at the Wight House, 96 N. Main in Bountiful, Thursday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m.

The Davis Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Committee will present the annual honor, presented each year to a woman who has provided exemplary service to the community.

Chamber president Jim Smith notes that the award is given to those who “demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business or profession.”

Recipients also “provide valuable service by contributing time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community.”

Finally, those so honored “actively assist women in realizing their full leadership potential.”

“Shirley’s life reflects the qualities embodied by the Athena Award, sustained over years of service,” Smith says. “She excels in both her professional and personal life and gives much back to the community and to the women with whom she associates.”

Bouwhuis is business outreach manager for Logistics Specialties, Inc., which specializes in defense business development and program support to help local firms win large government contracts.

As a part of the Utah procurement team, she is involved with a public/non-profit/private partnership. As such, “she demonstrates business expertise that goes beyond her duty title,” Smith says.

“Shirley is a key procurement leader and team member at LSI. She supports and assists approximately 30 women-owned businesses and other companies throughout Utah in learning the government contracting process and winning business opportunities,” he says.

Thanks to efforts of the procurement team, millions of dollars in economic development, with hundreds of jobs, have been secured in different areas of the state.

In addition to her vocational activities, Bouwhuis is very involved in community service. That includes service to the Davis Chamber of Commerce, Layton Rotary Club, Davis Arts Council, Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce, and the American Red Cross.

She is also involved with the Davis School District Foundation, Davis County Gala, Foster Parent Association, PTA, among others.

Bouwhuis is also chair of the Davis County Republican Party, recently doggedly spearheading the speaking engagement by former presidential adviser Karl Rove.

She and her husband, Mike, are parents of five children and have 12 grandchildren. The Layton resident is also involved in her church.

“I am very humbled and honored to be selected for this outstanding award,” Bouwhuis said. “I am in the company of great women who have previously received this award, along with other amazing women who were nominated this year.”
